You’re so weird!
Well thank you, I am! - That’s my inner teenager speaking. The one who was encouraged to be weird by my mom, who was/is also a total weirdo. As a teen, moms are like, so uncool. And my mom was no exception.
Except, people LOVED my mom. Spoiler alert: people STILL LOVE my mom.
It was repeated so often by extended family, colleagues, friends and others that I started to wonder if anyone loved me. (But that is a story for another post.)
What I didn’t fully understand at the time was this: Seeing her being her fullest, weirdest self and being loved for it was my compass.
It was a permission slip.
Her being made it ok for me to be. …to be the fullest, weirdest self that I am.
Thank you Mom.
Remember how at the beginning I said my inner teenager was speaking? That’s because she’s the one that is proud to be weird. Not grown-up me. I had to shove Teen down to be an “adult” in this world.
No one likes being shoved down, especially not a voracious teenager. And we don’t like when she’s cast out. She goes up to her attic bedroom and listens to sad songs, songs about creating My Own Prison.
Recently, my inner teenager has been uncaged, and I am not mad about it. She played as the Star Wars kid on Christmas with her nephews’ lightsabers. Well, until her nephew pointed out she hit herself in her leg, which equates to chopping it off. Argh no!
I could really use some of that boundless teenage energy and spirit. So, my dear inner teenager, you can come out to play.
I think she’s gonna have a great time at The Creator Retreat.
Does your inner teenager wanna come hang out with mine? I promise she won’t make you listen to Creed songs. Actually, no, I can’t promise that. But it is unlikely.
